It is not very often the elusive Madame Alexander Composition Portrait “Lady of Fashion” dolls come on the market. This is a 21″ composition portrait identified as “Renoir in the Alexander archive. It is more often identified as “Lady Windermere” as in “American Composition Dolls” Volume Two by Ursula R. See photo on page 25. The doll is in good condition with light crazing on her composition as seen in the photos. The facial complexion paint is vibrant and has not been retouched. The hand painted lashes and eyebrows are signature features of the portrait dolls, as are the blue painted eyelids, gray eye shadow and bright lip color. The full mohair wig is in the original set. This doll is wearing her original outfit with just the stockings, hat, and panties replaced. The composition 21 portrait dolls were originally marketed in 1938. They were discontinued during the WWII era, reappearing in 1946 when more characters were added to the group. Some of the original set were re-named in the later group.
