Madame Alexander Dolls

This lovely vintage doll is from Madame Alexander and was made in 1951. She represents Kathryn Grayson and is one of the Fashion Academy Mystery Portrait series dolls. She is made of hard plastic. Portrait series dolls were all exceptional and only a small number of each doll was made. She has elaborate “make-up” and facial paint – around the eyes, lashes with top eyeliner, bottom lashes and dramatic side lashes. She has lovely blushing and rosy full lips, blue eyes, and a very rare shade of red hair in her original set. Her bangs are straight, but her hair is combed back at the sides into captured rolls, with curls that tumble onto her shoulders. She has her original flowers in her hair. Her gown is truly outstanding with three layers in the skirt, a beautiful lacy bodice and rhinestones for sparkle. There is illusion tulle to her neck and a built in necklace. The outside layer of her skirt is tulle and quite crisp. Beneath that is another layer of very silky, soft tulle, and the final layer is cream satin that matches her underwear. She has her original underwear, stockings, garter, and center snap shoes. She has her original earrings and bracelet. Condition: Her outer tulle skirt is in good condition with a few small tears around the bottom. The soft, silky tulle inner skirt is damaged and has some small and some larger holes scattered throughout. The satin inner skirt is in quite good condition with only normal age 68 years! No significant stains or damages. The bodice is in excellent condition. Her face painting is beautiful, but please examine the photos carefully. They serve as the most complete description for this doll. Remember, the photos are often bigger than life size, and whatever small issues you might see definitely do not show when the doll is displayed. This doll definitely keeps Madame Alexander’s legacy of excellence burning bright! Her hand painted features are very sophisticated, as is her dress. I’m sure she could use a good cleaning after 68 years “shelf life”, but I will leave this to her new owner. The item “21 MME. 21-inch Madame Alexander Carmen from the Portrait doll Ladies of Fashion series first made in 1938 and again in post-war 1946. These dolls are famous for their hand-painted facial features: arched brows, black eyeliner, long painted lashes, blue eyeshadow above the eye and on the lids of the sleeping eyes and deep red lips. This lady also has a hand painted star beauty mark on her cheek. The dark brunette wig is styled with a thick braid atop her head and a bun at the nape of her neck. She wears her all original costume of a red dress with black lace trim, light pink cotton petticoat and matching pantie. Shoes are a matching red fabric. Bead and gold hoop earrings and fabric roses attached to the dress accessorize her outfit. Her black, not net mantilla is missing. The composition is in very good condition for one of these dolls which often have suffered over time. She only has fine craze lines on the face, some on the sides of the head, and deeper crazing on the leg. Please study the photos. 21 Madame Alexander 1946 Composition Portrait Scarlett O’Hara Original MA tag. 21 Madame Alexander 1946 composition Portrait series Scarlett O’Hara in wonderful vintage condition. Her hand painted facial features show arched brows, blue sleep eyes with blue green eye lids and mohair lashes, eye shadow and three long painted lashes at the outer corner of each eye. Her closed mouth has full red lips. Face paint is all original, no touch ups. The brunette mohair wig is in original set. She is wearing her original very full gown of rust bronze rayon fabric with zipper back and padded bosom. The gown features decorative bands of ribbon and fringe, an open weave black net bodice and lower sleeves tied with black velvet ribbon. At her throat is a pearl encircled red stone “brooch”. A very full petticoat with tiered ruffles and a feather boned hoop with eyelet edge holds out the fullness of the dress skirt. The petticoat has a cloth Madame Alexander tag. This is the only identification that these dolls had. The elegant bonnet shows Madame’s quality creative styling. The bonnet base is a white braid covered by a black netting veil and embellished with rose buds and ribbons. A elegant bow with long streamers ties under the chin. The white cotton stockings, eyelet trimmed pantalettes and the shoes are replaced with copies of the originals. Condition: the face shows one small split at the corner of one eye, and faint crazing. There is crazing on the torso, arms and especially the legs. Some areas have been filled and stabilized. Luckily a lady of the 1860s is clothed from head to toe so any condition issues are covered. There is some spotting on the skirt front which disappears in the folds, and a larger area on the side back(it looks worse in the pictures than it actually is). This is the 1967 Madame Alexander Renoir portrait doll. This is big sister. See the photo above to see big and little sister together. Big sister is a beautiful Madame Alexander portrait doll. Her brown eyes are set in such a way that she seems a bit mischievous. She may have a joke to tell. She is wearing a cheerful red taffeta hat with flowers, a sleeveless navy blue gown trimmed with lace, and over it, a tight cut jacket with lace-trimmed sleeves and a flower at the waist. If you have Marjorie Uhl’s book Madame Alexander’s Ladies of Fashion, a full description of her is found on page 125. One of the photos shows all that comes with her. Her hat and dress are original. The rest is replacement. Her new pearl earrings match the original. Her red sandals are Madame Alexander original, but the elastic has stretched. She has a new short crinoline petticoat that works well with her dress, new hosiery, and bloomers. She is in good condition except for some leg cracks as mentioned above, none of them dangerous. She has flawless eyes, her original complexion, and her hair in its original carefully pinned chignon. There were only a few of these special dolls made for window displays in just a few high end department stores (in the 1938 and then again after the war in 1946 I believe). I was told this Ballerina outfit style is from the 30s. Her composition is AMAZING. I dont see any crazing, the coloring of her skin & blushing on her cheeks, elbows and knees, & elaborate portrait make-up are vibrant and elegant. She is unusually rare, because of the portrait ballerinas, most had brown braid buns & brown eyes- this has blondish braid buns and outstanding blue eyes with full lashes. Her original Full skirted silky-netted tulle tutu is fragile but lovely, with a few small holes in the tulle. The matching panties are crisply tagged as is typical of these portraits. The heart & star sequins still retain their gold appearance, and her cabbage roses have a lovely round shape to them. The flowers in her hair are beautiful as well with elegant gold stars adorning the leaves and a few petals (matching the ones on her tutu). The black velvet ribbons at her wrists are fairly plush and in lovely condition. She is also still wearing her original soft pink ballet slippers. The photos are part of the description. There are two things that keep this doll from being mint in box. The first, is the rear bustle ribbon has some age spots. I suspect it is from being in the box for so long. The second, is that her hang tag is missing. Please note: this doll will come to you in a box that is an oversized L- 22 in x H- 14 in x.
